Washington County Clarifies Courthouse Safety Following Judicial Proclamation

Washington County has been made aware of the proclamation issued by the District and County Court at Law Judges regarding the Washington County Courthouse.

At this time, we want to reassure the public that the internal structural integrity of the courthouse has not been compromised. The current courthouse project is focused on exterior restoration work, and there have been no findings indicating that the building is unsafe for occupancy.

Recent statements regarding structural integrity are related to exterior stone conditions and anchoring systems, which are part of the ongoing restoration project and are being actively addressed. These conditions do not reflect concerns with the building’s internal structural system.

Out of an abundance of caution and in alignment with our commitment to public safety, County Judge John Durrenberger implemented additional protective measures on January 12, 2026, including:

• Securing the courthouse square with perimeter fencing
• Installing enhanced overhead protection at all public entrance points

Further measures were taken through a project change order to address the expanded anchor repair scope identified during construction. This work is part of ensuring the long-term integrity and safety of the courthouse exterior. As noted by the TYLin engineer during the OAC (Owner, Architect, Contractor) meeting in late January 2026, there are no known concerns related to the building’s internal structural system.

Noise decibel testing will be conducted this week once contractors are back on-site. This testing will help evaluate construction-related impacts and ensure that court operations and working environments remain appropriate moving forward.

As part of a collaborative effort to support court operations during the exterior restoration project, Washington County is finalizing a temporary off-site courtroom location. The facility is being prepared to meet all necessary requirements, including approvals from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Fire Marshal, Texas Commission on Jail Standards, and the Office of Court Administration. This effort ensures that court proceedings will continue safely, securely, and without disruption, while maintaining uninterrupted judicial services for the public.

A detailed response to the District Judge’s March 19, 2026 letter is forthcoming from the contractor, along with the architectural and engineering firm overseeing the project. The response will address the questions submitted and provide further confirmation regarding the safety and integrity of the facility. Washington County anticipates receiving it by the start of business on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.

Washington County remains committed to transparency, safety, and maintaining uninterrupted service to the public. We will continue to work collaboratively with all parties to ensure accurate information is shared and appropriate decisions are made in the best interest of our community.
